DIRECTIONS TO PINCUSHION BED AND BREAKFAST FROM SOUTH:

Continue on Hwy 61 through the only stoplight in Grand Marais and continue (east) past the stoplight about 1/2 mile to the first left intersection 300 feet past the Chevy Car Dealer. You’ll see signs for Gunflint Trail, Resorts and County Road 12. Turn left (north).

This portion of the new road (Fall 2004) is a realignment of the first mile of the Gunflint Trail (Co. Rd 12). Follow this new road to nearly a thousand feet in elevation gain for about 3 miles (2.8 mi to be exact).

Look for our mailbox 968 Gunflint Trail near the top of the hill (one mile past the Pincushion Mountain Area signs). Turn right (east) on the driveway and continue 1800 feet (.2 mi) to the B & B.

You are here! Park and come on up to the front door.

Hint: The driveway is about one mile further (north) of the signs for the Pincushion Mountain Area access also known as County Road 53 and Pincushion Drive. It really is not hard to find us!

The B&B sits high on the quiet Sawtooth Mountain ridgeline, 1,000 feet above Lake Superior’s scenic North Shore. PINCUSHION MOUNTAIN TRAIL SYSTEM

3 miles from Grand Marais, Minnesota the Pincushion Mountain trail system averages 95 inches annually (8 feet). Overnight guests can ski directly from the Bed and Breakfasts front door. Pincushion Mountain’s 25 kilometers (15 miles of 12 loops) of Pisten Bully groomed and tracked trails range from easy to challenging. Pincushion grooms trails for both ski skating and traditional diagonal stride technique. Separate marked snowshoes trails also are available.

All skill levels, groomed for both classic and ski skating. 30% easier, 40% more difficult (intermediate) and 30% most difficult.

AVERAGE SKI SEASON.

December 15 to April 1. Total annual snowfall averages 95 inches or 8 feet. We average over a foot of snow on the ground for 110 days.

TRAIL ENTRANCE

The Pincushion Mountain Trail is the first cross country ski trail system you’ll pass on the Gunflint Trail, just 2 miles from Grand Marais, Minnesota. The extensive trails, of a regionally acclaimed system, offers skiers of all abilities opportunities to enjoy gentle scenic terrain, rolling hills or even steep hills. Take a break at an outstanding vista of Lake Superior from the summit of Pincushion Mountain, or glide along the gentle slope adjacent to the Devil Track River valley. Other optional sections are wonderful training grounds for seasoned racers. You may want to enter or watch our local Sawtooth Ski Race held on the Pincushion trail in early January.

A skier’s warming building (built 1998) is open daily, at the public entrance, to provide a place to warm up and take a break. At the same location is a 1.8 km soft lighted night ski trail that is available 7 nights a week.

Two newer trails (Snowman Loops) were completed in 2002 and add 2.4 km of easier loops between the B&B and the public trailhead entrance.

PINCUSHION MOUNTAIN & LAKE SUPERIOR HIKING TRAILS JUST OUT THE DOOR

Come summer, Pincushion Bed and Breakfast and it’s four guest rooms overlooking the trails, is a favorite destination of hikers. The 25 km (15 miles) of Pincushion Mountain’s trails offers 11 loops with vistas of Lake Superior’s North Shore, the Devil Track River Valley and woods of birch, aspen and pine. Bird lovers can use the trail system to view the common birds of the area’s boreal forest. The Pincushion trail connects with the 200 mile long Superior Hiking Trail. The Superior Hiking Trail has been ranked as one of the Top 10 trails in the United States by Backpacker Magazine. Thanks to the B&B’s trail side location, Pincushion often hosts lodge to lodge hikers spending nights at different lodges and inns along the Superior Hiking Trail.

WILDLIFE AND NATURE

The Superior Hiking and the Pincushion Mountain Trails affords you the opportunity to observe wildlife in a natural setting. There is an abundance of moose, deer, black bear and timber wolf. Hawk migration can be observed in the fall season. Wildflowers start in late May and raspberries, thimbleberries, blueberries are plentiful in July and August. Fall colors begin in Mid September with the maples turning red. The rest of the forest peaks about the 3rd week of September and continues till about October 10 at the B&B, but up till mid October along the North Shore next to Lake Superior.
